Halv vs Splitwise
The short version. Both apps split shared costs, keep running balances and simplify debts so a group settles in fewer payments. Splitwise has a web app, more languages and recurring expenses, and puts receipt scanning, currency conversion, unlimited daily expenses and an ad-free experience behind its Pro subscription.
Halv has no subscription, no ads and no daily limit. Its one paid feature is receipt scanning, with three free scans and then a one-off pass. Every group keeps a separate ledger per currency instead of converting, and paying back opens Revolut or copies an IBAN, which suits friends in Europe.

When Splitwise is the better pick
- You want to use it in a web browser or on a computer. Halv is phone-only.
- You settle up with Venmo or PayPal in the US, or Paytm in India.
- You need recurring expenses, such as monthly rent that adds itself.
- You want everything converted into one currency and are happy to pay for Pro.
- You need a language other than English or Polish.
When Halv is the better pick
- You don't want a subscription, ads or a cap on how many expenses you add in a day.
- You travel in more than one currency and want each balance kept in the currency it was spent in, with no made-up exchange rate.
- Your friends pay each other with Revolut or bank transfers, as most of Europe does.
- You split restaurant bills from the receipt, item by item, and only need to scan now and then.
- Some of the group won't install an app. They can still see what they owe from a link.
Questions
Is Halv a free alternative to Splitwise?
Yes. Splitting, balances and settling up in Halv are free with no subscription, no ads and no daily limit on expenses. The only paid feature is receipt scanning: three scans are free, then a one-off Trip Pass or Group Pass.
Does Halv convert currencies like Splitwise Pro?
No, on purpose. Halv keeps a separate ledger per currency in every group, so a dollar expense in a euro trip stays in dollars and nobody settles a number based on a made-up exchange rate. Splitwise Pro can convert expenses into one currency using exchange rates.
Can I pay friends back through Halv?
Halv never holds or moves money. Friends save how they like to be paid, and paying them back is one tap: Revolut opens with the amount and currency filled in, or their IBAN is copied for your banking app. Then Halv records the payment.
Does Halv have a web app like Splitwise?
No. Halv is an app for iPhone and Android. People who haven't installed it can still open a web link that shows what they owe.
