Halv vs Tricount
The short version. Both are free bill-splitting apps with no ads, no subscription and no limit on expenses. Tricount is available in far more languages, converts every expense into one group currency at the daily market rate, sends payment requests in the app and can add expenses straight from a bunq card.
Halv never converts: every group keeps a separate ledger per currency. It splits receipts item by item from a photo, nets one balance per friend across all your groups, and pays back in one tap through Revolut or a copied IBAN. Receipt scanning is Halv's one paid feature, with three free scans and then a one-off pass.

When Tricount is the better pick
- You want everything in one currency, converted automatically at the daily rate.
- You bank with bunq and want card payments to become shared expenses automatically.
- Your group needs a language other than English or Polish.
- You're on an older iPhone that can't run iOS 18.
- You want receipt photos attached but never need to split a receipt line by line, so you'd never pay for scanning.
When Halv is the better pick
- You travel in more than one currency and want each balance kept in the currency it was spent in, so nobody settles a number based on someone else's exchange rate.
- You split restaurant bills item by item from the receipt.
- You share costs with the same people in several groups and want one number per friend.
- Your friends pay each other with Revolut or bank transfers and you want the payment ready to send in one tap.
Questions
Are Halv and Tricount both free?
Yes. Both are free with no ads and no subscription. Tricount lists no paid features. Halv's only paid feature is receipt scanning: three scans are free, then a one-off Trip Pass or Group Pass.
How do Halv and Tricount handle multiple currencies?
Tricount converts each expense into the tricount's default currency at a market rate that updates daily, and lets you edit the rate. Halv never converts: each group keeps a separate ledger per currency, so a dollar expense in a euro trip stays in dollars.
Does Halv work with Revolut?
Yes. When a friend has saved Revolut as how they like to be paid, tapping their Revolut chip opens Revolut with the amount and currency already filled in. Halv itself never holds or moves money.
